Nancy Brataas: a woman who many admired, and some feared. She was a political force and a tireless advocate for Rochester and the Republican Party.
Nancy matured and became a leader in the days when few women were in leadership positions or were welcomed when they did achieve one. She learned early-on to be self-reliant. She was wary and alert for signs of intrigue or political maneuvering….and over the years, she herself became skilled in strategic moves and political maneuvering.
She also had political courage to take a leadership role on issues, even when there were political consequences, including from her party. Yet, she remained loyal to the party and loyal to her community, and loyal to those whom she allowed to become close to her. I count my blessings that I was among them.
Nancy was a powerful mentor and role model. Her exacting standards taught many a young assistant, new staffer, or candidate for office what it would take to succeed, including me. It may have been challenging to work for and with her, but one always knew that you were developing skills and experience that would serve you well.
And, when you met Nancy’s standards and she praised your accomplishments or when you worked together to achieve some political or legislative aim, you really felt you had accomplished something grand.
Nancy made a difference for many people. I would not be the person I am today if it had not been for Nancy’s mentorship and friendship. It was a privilege to know her and an even bigger one to be her colleague and friend.

It saddens me greatly to lose her.
